From the quill to the smartphone: The history of writing

Discover and delight in the history of the development of writing in this one-hour tour.

The oldest writing we know of was done by the Sumerians some 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. Numerous clay slabs excavated in what is now southern Iraq, replicas of which are now on display at the HNF, tell us much about the origins of writing and arithmetic. Every stage in the development of writing is followed, including the formation of letters, the mechanisation of writing in the 19th century and word processing at the computer.
